Grimoire Fugus

      The Book of Fugue

      Chapter 1 · Chapter 2 ▶

¹And in those days, after many generations, the people of Oærth had spread across the lands and grown in multitude.
²They tilled the fields and built cities, they gathered in tribes, and their tongues were made diverse.
³The Brothers beheld the nations from Their seats in HÆVAN and HÆL, and the council looked on in silence.
⁴Then ADONAI descended alone to Oærth and walked in the highlands of the East, among a scattered people.
⁵He came unto a tent of goatskin and was received with reverence, for His splendour did cause men to bow.
⁶And He spake unto them, saying, Behold, I am thy Maker, and I shall dwell among thee if thou wilt hearken.
⁷And the people trembled, for never before had one of the Brothers spoken such a word to mortals.
⁸ADONAI said, Of all the tribes beneath the skies, thee will I favour, and raise up as My own.
⁹I shall bless thy seed and thy flocks, and thou shalt walk not as the nations round about thee.
¹⁰And they answered Him, saying, Let it be so; we shall be thy people, and thou shalt be our god.
¹¹And ADONAI named them Levites, and marked them with laws and customs not given to the others.
¹²He taught them the rites of sacrifice and the burning of incense, the keeping of days and the manner of speech.
¹³He instructed them to build no image, and to raise no voice unto another power.
¹⁴And they did all that He commanded, and He walked among them in spirit, guiding their way.
¹⁵But the nations beheld this, and were confused, for they knew not why one people should be raised above the rest.
¹⁶And the Dæmons murmured in the halls of HÆL, saying, Hath the balance now been broken?
¹⁷Then did SATANAS rise from His throne and walk the fiery corridors, pondering what must now be done.
¹⁸For He loved all the peoples of Oærth, and had not before set one above the other.
¹⁹But seeing that the balance might be lost, He turned His face unto the South, where the people of the river dwelt.
²⁰And SATANAS came among them in the likeness of a man, strong and bright, and spake unto their kings.
²¹He said, Lo, I am thy Maker, though thou knewest it not; and I have watched thy strength and thy wisdom.
²²I shall set thee above the nations, and give thee cunning in art and in war, in building and in dream.
²³And the kings of the river answered Him, saying, Let it be so; we shall walk in thy name.
²⁴And SATANAS called them Egyptians, and gave them mysteries and temples and signs in stone.
²⁵Thus were two peoples chosen upon Oærth, and the council beheld it with troubled countenance.
²⁶Then were the Levites taught the words of the law, and the Egyptians the signs of the stars and the tongue of stone.
²⁷ADONAI walked among the tents of the Levites, and His light did rest upon the hilltops where they gathered.
²⁸And SATANAS walked among the pillars of the Egyptians, and His voice was heard in the depths of their sanctuaries.
²⁹The Levites were few, yet they grew in knowledge and were fervent in prayer and supplication.
³⁰The Egyptians were mighty, and they adorned their walls with visions of the skies and secrets of the deep.
³¹Each people flourished beneath the hand of their Maker, and feared not the other, for there was yet no strife.
³²But among the Seraphim, there was murmuring; and among the Dæmons, there was concern.
³³For the council was not gathered in these matters, and the balance, though not broken, was strained.
³⁴Some said, Let all be done freely, as the Brothers will; others said, Let all be done with measure and counsel.
³⁵And ADONAI said, I have chosen, and My word is My own; I shall not return unto the council for this.
³⁶SATANAS said, I have answered thy choice, and would not have done so, save that it was needful.
³⁷Then did the Brothers meet upon the bridge of the Causeway, beneath the stars, where no wall stood between Them.
³⁸And ADONAI said, The people are Mine, and they shall be called holy, and I shall shape them for Myself.
³⁹SATANAS answered, And shall the rest be forgotten? Shall those whom We have made be set aside?
⁴⁰But ADONAI spake not of the others, only of His own, saying, I will raise them above all the nations.
⁴¹Then SATANAS turned His countenance and said, I shall make Mine also to prosper, that the balance be not lost.
⁴²For though I would have all to be as one, yet if thou dividest, I must divide also.
⁴³And thus was the breach born, though no blow had yet been struck, nor voice yet lifted in wrath.
⁴⁴The Seraphim returned unto HÆVAN and the Dæmons unto HÆL, each bearing thoughts not before kindled.
⁴⁵The Levites set their faces to the East and built altars upon every hill; they sang psalms and burned incense.
⁴⁶The Egyptians carved the stone with hidden things, and their scribes wrote wisdom in scrolls sealed with gold.
⁴⁷So began the Age of the Chosen, and the Oærth was no longer as it had been.
⁴⁸And the council was silent, awaiting the days to come, when the fruit of these choices should appear.
⁴⁹And the veil between HÆVAN and HÆL was thinned, for love and rivalry now dwelt together in the hearts of the Brothers.
