Grimoire Fugus
The Book of Fugue
◀ Chapter 4 · Chapter 5 · Chapter 6 ▶

¹So was the heart of ADONAI stirred, and He conceived a thing to bring His people again unto Himself.
²And ADONAI called from His throne one of the eldest Seraphim, whose wings had touched the fires of the beginning.
³His voice was as quiet water, yet it bore the weight of eternity, and His eyes beheld both mercy and wrath.
Go thou, said ADONAI; in the dark of the night, where no watcher seeth and no trumpet soundeth.
Pass over the houses of My people, the children of the covenant, and let thy breath be as the east wind.
Stir not the beasts nor the children, neither touch thou the fruit nor the vine, but speak unto the soul alone.
Let not thy feet leave mark upon the Oærth, nor thy wings stir the dust of the threshold.
Say not thy name, nor speak aloud, but let thy presence be as the shadow that knoweth not its cause.
Enter their dreams and their rest, and turn their thoughts as the potter turneth clay upon the wheel.
¹⁰Let them question, and not know why; let them tremble, and not name the fear that draweth near.
¹¹For I have need of their stirring, and of their unease I shall bring forth remembrance.
¹²Be thou neither cruel nor kind, but a sword sealed in silence, that pierceth without wound.
¹³And the Seraph bowed low, veiling his face in flame, and departed from the courts of HÆVAN.
¹⁴He descended not with lightning nor fire, but with hush, as the mist upon the morning fields.
¹⁵None in Egypt saw his coming, neither did any hear his flight, for he moved between the moments.
¹⁶The Nile was still, and the moon held its breath, as the messenger of ADONAI passed unseen.
¹⁷Into the dwellings of the Levites he went, even into the chambers of the sleeping and the wise.
¹⁸He laid no hand upon them, nor did his shadow darken their doors; yet his presence entered every house.
¹⁹In the stillness he whispered unto the soul, and the soul received him though it knew not the voice.
²⁰Dreams were turned to burden, and rest became as a garment filled with thorns.
²¹They awoke and were troubled, and spake not their trouble, for they understood it not.
²²By day their work was slowed, and their joy did lessen, though they knew no cause.
²³At night they tossed upon their beds, and the moonlight brought neither comfort nor song.
²⁴Mothers forgot the words of their lullabies, and fathers did not laugh as aforetime.
²⁵The old men sat in silence, and the young sought pleasures that satisfied not.
²⁶The voice of the heart was veiled, and the path of wisdom grew dim.
²⁷One said to another: Hast thou felt a change? and the other said, Yea, but I know not the cause.
²⁸Some looked toward the land of their fathers and remembered it, though they had not longed for it in years.
²⁹Others spake of dreams wherein the sun turned and did not rise again, and they wept not knowing why.
³⁰The Egyptians perceived it not, for the outward face of the Levites was yet calm.
³¹But SATANAS beheld from HÆL, and said nothing, though the fire in His depths stirred faintly.
³²The Seraph returned by the way he came, and the wind closed behind him, leaving no trace.
³³He stood once more before ADONAI, saying: It is done as Thou hast commanded.
³⁴And ADONAI looked upon the Oærth and saw the turning of hearts, and was pleased.
³⁵Let it ripen, He said; as the fig in its season, for soon they shall seek My face.
³⁶But the stars trembled in their watches, and the balance between the realms did quiver unseen.
³⁷The Seraphim spake not, neither did the Dæmons, for the silence was thick upon the deep.
³⁸In HÆL, SATANAS rose from His seat and walked the seven circles, saying no word to His ministers.
³⁹He beheld the Causeway that joined the realms, and its arches grew cold with unseen frost.
⁴⁰So the bond is touched, He said at length; though no sword is yet drawn, nor fire loosed.
⁴¹The hand that stirreth the heart shall yet shape the world, if it be not stayed.
⁴²And He turned again to His throne, but His gaze did not lift from the realm between.
⁴³So ended the stillness of peace, though none yet named it ended, nor knew from whence the change had come.
