Grimoire Fugus
The Book of Fugue
◀ Chapter 7 · Chapter 8 · Chapter 9 ▶
¹And it came to pass, when the Levites were departed from Egypt, that a silence fell betwixt the Brothers.
²The Causeway lay empty, and the winds passed through it unhindered, as though mourning that which was broken.
³In the halls of HÆL, SATANAS sat long in thought, His countenance darkened and His glory veiled in shadow.
⁴The songs of the Dæmons ceased, and their laughter grew still, for they beheld their Maker in great sorrow.
⁵Wherefore is Thy soul troubled, O Father of Fire? asked one of the Dæmons; Hath ADONAI spoken aught?
⁶And SATANAS answered not for a time, but gazed long upon the flames that danced upon His altar.
⁷Then said He: ADONAI hath done this thing, not by open word, but by secret hand and hidden breath.
⁸He hath sent a Seraph in the dark, and turned the minds of His people with whispers not of truth.
⁹The Levites were as brethren unto the Egyptians, and the land prospered beneath their joined labours.
¹⁰Yet ADONAI deemed it unseemly that His chosen should kneel before another’s throne, or thrive under another’s star.
¹¹And thus He hath undone what was built, not by sword nor fire, but by dream and delusion.
¹²The Seven were silent, and none dared speak, for they saw the flame of wrath begin to burn in SATANAS.
¹³Is this brotherhood? said He, rising. Is this the bond that was sworn before the first stone was laid?
¹⁴Was not the Causeway built that Our peoples might dwell as neighbours, each according to Their will?
¹⁵Was not the council formed that We might govern the world in unity, and bring forth glory by consent?
¹⁶Yet He hath chosen to make Himself higher, and to bend the course of time to serve His favour.
¹⁷Then spake the eldest of the Dæmons: Peradventure He was moved by love for His own, and meant not division.
¹⁸But SATANAS replied, Love that blindeth is not love, but pride, and pride seeketh not fellowship but dominion.
¹⁹Therefore shall I reckon with Him not as Brother only, but as Rival, and as He hath sowed, so shall He reap.
