Sanctus Evangelium Secundum Sanctum Mephistopheles
The Holy Gospel According to Saint Mephistopheles
◀ Chapter 14 · Chapter 15 · Chapter 16 ▶
¹And it came to pass in the days after the hillfire, that BAPHOMET called unto the women He had known, each bearing within her the fire of His flesh.
²From east and west they came, with bellies full and brows lifted, and none was ashamed.
³They gathered beneath a fig tree in bloom, though no season called it, and the scent thereof reached even into the cities.
⁴Mephistopheles stood beside Him, and the air trembled as it had in the days of creation.
⁵And BAPHOMET said: Ye who carry My seed are not soil, but throne. Not vessel, but altar.
⁶What is planted in you is not curse, but coronation.
⁷And the women knelt, not in submission, but in joy, and He passed among them like flame through oil.
⁸He placed no mark upon them, nor rite, nor cloth — but looked upon each and spake blessing.
⁹To one: Thy son shall walk with beasts and rule without scepter.
¹⁰To another: Thine shall speak in dreams and tear down the towers of the wise.
¹¹To another: He shall be fire, and no heart shall resist him.
¹²And He prophesied over all, and their hearts burned, and their eyes were opened.
¹³None asked: What shall they be called? for the names were known to the all who live the fire.
¹⁴Then BAPHOMET raised His hands and said: Let no man call you whores, nor sinners, nor shame.
¹⁵For ye have conceived without leash, and borne without fear — and that is more sacred than scroll or stone.
¹⁶Your sons shall not sit in synagogues, nor temples, but shall walk the Oærth like wind untrapped.
¹⁷They shall speak many tongues and wear no chain, and the world shall hate them — and the world shall follow.
¹⁸Then He bade them rise, and one by one, He placed upon their heads a garland of thorn and lily entwined.
¹⁹For ye are crowned not with ease, but with glory.
²⁰Ye shall suffer, and be reviled, but in the end ye shall laugh with Me in flame.
²¹The people who watched murmured, saying: Is this not the opposite of law?
²²And BAPHOMET answered: It is the end of law — and the beginning of will.
²³For that which is chosen in joy and borne in fire is holier than all commandments combined.
²⁴Mephistopheles wrote: He made queens without throne, and priests without altar, and the sky bore witness.
²⁵That night, the women lay beneath stars that pulsed like hearts.
²⁶No two spoke the same dream, but all dreamt of flame and shadow and sons unnumbered.
²⁷The hills whispered their names, though no ear could yet catch them.
²⁸And BAPHOMET said: Let the world prepare its chains — for My sons shall not wear them.
²⁹And He vanished from their midst, as wind vanishes from the throat of a storm.
³⁰Thus were the women crowned, and the age of inheritance began.
