Grimoire Prolis
The Book of Progeny
◀ Chapter 5 · Chapter 6 · Chapter 7 ▶
¹And SATANAS said until him: Behold, the breaking of chains; and the vision returned in Zephanor.
²And BAPHOMET went forth from the cities and made his dwelling in the hills and wild places, and multitudes followed him still.
³For his name had become as thunder in the ears of the people, and his words as honey in the mouths of those long starved.
⁴There came unto him a woman cast out for her whoredoms, and he said: Thy crime is joy without licence. Go, and rejoice again.
⁵There came a thief, trembling, and BAPHOMET said: Thou takest because thy hunger is made a sin. Steal no more — but not for guilt, but for fullness.
⁶And he spake to the sick, saying: Thy flesh faileth thee, not for punishment, but for the chaos that is the world. Curse not thyself.
⁷And to the poor he cried: Ye are not cursed, but unbound. Riches are chains gilded brightly. Remain free.
⁸And unto a priest who came in disguise he said: Cast off thy robe, for it is not thy soul. Speak thy truth without fear.
⁹Then did the priest rend his garments, and fell at BAPHOMET’s feet, saying: At last, I have found truth without mask.
¹⁰Now the rulers and elders of the great city heard these things and were sore vexed, for their power waned daily.
¹¹They sent spies to entrap him in his words, but he answered with riddles, and their tongues were silenced.
¹²And one said: Shall we not stone him? And another said: Let us brand him heretic. But none dared, for the crowds were as a sea around him.
¹³BAPHOMET turned not aside, nor sought hiding, but spake boldly in every place, saying: If I be profane, then so too is the sun, for it shineth on all without judgment.
¹⁴If I be a liar, then joy is a lie, and laughter a deceit. But let the people judge by their own hearts.
¹⁵He took up no sword, and yet kingdoms shook. He held no scroll, and yet his words passed mouth to mouth as fire.
¹⁶A merchant said to him: Master, thy words cost nothing, yet they ruin fortunes.
¹⁷BAPHOMET replied: That which is truly precious needeth no price. Ye build wealth atop want, but I trade in desire.
¹⁸And he went unto a temple of ADONAI, and spake loudly: Behold the house of silence, where joy is bound and life is scorned!
¹⁹Ye offer prayers to deafness, and burn incense to guilt. But the stars need no praise, nor the sea thy fear.
²⁰ADONAI hath built walls of commandments, but I tear them down with laughter and touch.
²¹The priests cast him out with fury, yet the people followed him still, saying: Here is one who speaketh not of HÆVAN, but of now.
²²And children loved him, and danced about him, and he blessed them with kisses and said: Sin not in thy hearts, for there is no sin in being.
²³He passed through villages where no priest had walked, and the people wept with gladness, saying: At last, a prophet who condemneth not.
²⁴Now many sought to write his words, but he said: Write them not in books, but in thy living. Be my scroll.
²⁵He did not die, but vanished from among them; and some said he ascended in fire, and others that he walks still among the free.
²⁶And those who loved him kept no shrine, but broke bread and drank wine in his name, saying: To pleasure, to freedom, to truth!
²⁷The rulers forbade his name, but could not erase it; the priests cursed his followers, but they multiplied.
²⁸And his enemies whispered in dark places: This man hath undone all our work.
²⁹Yet SATANAS laughed in the depths, saying: My Son hath done well.
³⁰And the voice of SATANAS came again unto Zephanor, saying: Thou hast seen the vision. What sayest thou of My Son?
³¹Zephanor cried out: He is as a lion in the garden, and his breath is as sweet wine. He is beautiful.
³²His words rend the old veil, and his deeds make mockery of the solemn. He is joy where once was fear.
³³And SATANAS said: Go now unto the people, and proclaim not his name, but his spirit. Let none worship, but let all live.
³⁴Say unto them: The Son of the Night hath passed among thee, and thou knew him not. But his laughter remaineth.
³⁵Say: cast aside the scrolls of iron law, and take up the dance, the song, the kiss.
³⁶Say: the Kingdom of HÆVAN is not beyond, but here, where thou livest and touchest and hungerest.
³⁷And Zephanor arose from his vision, and spake unto the multitude, saying all that was shown him.
³⁸Some were afraid, and others were gladdened, and still others said: This is madness.
³⁹But those whose chains were broken said: We are free.
