Grimoire Fugus
The Book of Fugue
◀ Chapter 2 · Chapter 3 · Chapter 4 ▶
¹And the years passed as a river floweth, and the children of Jacob multiplied exceedingly in the land of Egypt.
²Their tents became cities, and their cities were filled with mirth and wisdom, with crafts and cunning workmanship.
³They tilled the plains and made them fruitful, and their vines crept upon the walls of the Pharaoh’s storehouses.
⁴In the marketplaces they were known for fairness, and their balances did not lie, neither did their hands falter.
⁵They gathered the herbs of the marsh and the spice of the east, and mingled them with oil for healing.
⁶They caught fish from the Nile and shaped boats of reed, and their nets brought forth plenty for all who lacked.
⁷The beasts of burden they bred in abundance, and no chariot lacked its steed, nor yoke its oxen.
⁸They took clay from the banks and shaped it with fire, and made vessels both humble and noble.
⁹Their looms turned flax into fine linen, and their hands knew the measure of thread and colour.
¹⁰In temples they served as scribes and recorders, and their scrolls did not err in numbers nor omit truth.
¹¹Among the artisans they were many, and their carvings adorned the gates and sanctuaries of Egypt.
¹²The harvest was multiplied sevenfold, and the granaries of the land were filled as never before.
¹³Even the stars above were measured by their watchers, who spake the courses of the skies in wise sayings.
¹⁴The Egyptians saw and were glad, for the strangers that dwelt among them had become as pillars in the land.
¹⁵The children of the Levites took to wife and husband among their own, and grew in number as the sand by the sea.
¹⁶Their songs were heard in the fields at the rising of the sun, and in the courts at the setting thereof.
¹⁷Their elders sat in the gates and judged with equity, and no bribe passed their hand.
¹⁸They planted gardens in the desert, and fountains sprang where none had flowed aforetime.
¹⁹They raised schools beside the sanctuaries, and their children learned to write the tongue of the fathers.
²⁰In wisdom they walked with the sons of Egypt, and neither despised the other in the years of peace.
²¹Their festivals mingled with the feasts of the land, and offerings were given in joy and in reverence.
²²The beasts of the field were increased, and none lacked milk, nor fleece, nor meat in due season.
²³When the sun blazed, their shade was near; and when the rains ceased, they digged channels and brought the water forth.
²⁴The Pharaoh’s heart was at ease toward them, and the people remembered Joseph and his righteousness.
²⁵The scribes of Egypt recorded their doings, and said, Lo, the land is fat with the labour of the strangers.
²⁶Their daughters danced before the temples, and their sons guarded the gates and the walls.
²⁷The plagues of the past were not remembered, for the land was whole and the gods were at rest.
²⁸And the name of the Brothers was praised both in HÆL and in HÆVAN, for the balance yet held firm.
²⁹The Seraphim watched from above and were content; the Dæmons below stirred not in envy.
³⁰For the works of the Levites honoured ADONAI, and the peace of Egypt honoured SATANAS.
³¹No man spake evil of the other, for all drank of the same cup and ate from the same loaf.
³²And the bond of unity was strong, though none could say whence it came, nor how long it should endure.
³³So passed the generations in harmony and increase, and the world was good in those days.
