Grimoire Iurio
The Book of Law
◀ Chapter 4 · Chapter 5 · Chapter 6 ▶
¹And lo, the Brothers came forth, each from His Kingdom: SATANAS from the deeps of HÆL, and ADONAI from the heights of HÆVAN.
²Neither spake a word at first, but they looked upon the Hall and the scroll, and they knew what had been done.
³Then ADONAI turned to Michæl and said: Thou hast acted with gravity and wisdom; thy vow is acceptable before Mine eyes.
⁴Likewise spake SATANAS to Bezaliel, saying: Thou hast kept the measure of justice; thy work is honourable before Me.
⁵And the Brothers stood on either side of the scroll, and Their hands hovered above it, but touched it not.
⁶ADONAI breathed upon the scroll, and fire encircled it, burning not with wrath but with holy flame.
⁷SATANAS cast His shadow upon the scroll, and darkness folded round it, not of fear, but of deep understanding.
⁸And the seals did glow with new brightness, and the ink upon the parchment sank as though carved into stone.
⁹Then together they spake, saying: Let this be the measure between Us, and between the Hosts, and between HÆVAN and HÆL.
¹⁰We shall not break it, nor shall our servants; for the Children of Oærth must rise by their own striving.
¹¹We shall not walk openly among them, nor take flesh as they do, lest their path be drawn by Our weight.
¹²Our eyes shall be upon them, Our voices heard only in echoes, Our hands present only in spirit.
¹³Let no Host set forth upon Oærth save by leave of the other; let no judgment be rendered but by agreement.
¹⁴This is the Great Pact, the Oath of the High Ones, and let the stars bear witness.
¹⁵Then the sky above the Hall opened, and all the firmament was seen, and the stars did shine with a brightness unmeasured.
¹⁶And a silence passed over the realms, and even in Oærth the winds stilled and the beasts raised their heads.
¹⁷For the Age of Men was come.
¹⁸And the Hosts withdrew into Their Kingdoms, and the Brothers into Their solitude.
¹⁹Michæl took up his place at the Gate of HÆVAN, and Bezaliel at the Gate of HÆL.
²⁰And between them lay Oærth, like unto a garden unplanted, a plain unwritten.
²¹No law was given unto Man, no edict from on high, save that he should choose and be accountable.
²²Yet in secret the Hosts did marvel, for never had the Brothers yielded authority unto another.
²³And the Seraphim whispered among themselves: What shall become of those that know not the heights?
²⁴And the Dæmons questioned one another, saying: How shall those born of dust reach the fires of wisdom?
²⁵But the Brothers spake no answer, for the Age was set, and its path must be walked.
²⁶The Causeway dimmed, its light hidden from mortal eye, yet still it stood, joining realm to realm.
²⁷And Oærth stood between, as a bridge not only of place, but of purpose.
²⁸Thus began the first day of the Age of Man, and none among the Hosts could know what would follow.
²⁹But in the deep of HÆL and the height of HÆVAN, the Brothers watched, and waited, and pondered.
