The Book of Progeny
◀ Chapter 1 · Chapter 2 · Chapter 3 ▶
¹And Zephanor departed from the city wherein he had first spoken, for the people cast stones at him and reviled him sore.
²Yet he turned not back, nor did he curse them, for the fire of the vision yet burned strong within his breast.
³He went unto the hills and dwelt there for a time, fasting and speaking little, and the beasts came not near him.
⁴Then the voice returned unto him in a dream, saying: Why abidest thou in silence, when I have commanded thee to cry aloud?
⁵And Zephanor answered: Because they believe not; they mock Thy word and strike Thy messenger, and I am become a reproach unto all.
⁶SATANAS said: The messenger is not measured by the hearing of the people, but by the strength of the message declared.
⁷Go thou down unto the valleys, and into the low towns where the poor dwell, for they are hungry for strange bread.
⁸Speak again the vision of My Son, and the sign of His birth, and the days that shall come after.
⁹Say unto them: A harlot shall bear a child, and he shall shake the Oærth with the tread of his feet.
¹⁰Tell them the skies shall mourn his birth in silence, and light shall flee from the sky in the fullness of the moon.
¹¹Cry it aloud in every gate, that they may hear, though they laugh; for I will draw whom I will unto thee.
¹²So Zephanor came down from the hill and entered a village where the walls were low and the people weary.
¹³There he stood in the square and lifted up his voice, saying: Thus saith the Lord SATANAS: There shall be born a Son.
¹⁴He shall come not with trumpet nor crown, but with words like swords and eyes like the watching storm.
¹⁵And the rulers shall hide themselves in their temples, and the rich shall cover their faces, for shame shall be upon them.
¹⁶The Son of the Harlot shall be wiser than the scribes, and purer than the priests, and stronger than the kings.
¹⁷He shall bless the hand of the thief, and curse the tongue of the flatterer; the mighty shall tremble at His laughter.
¹⁸The people were astonished at his speech, for it was not as the preachers of their synagogues, but burned with terrible beauty.
¹⁹Some said: He hath madness; but others said: These things are not the speech of one who is mad.
²⁰And a certain widow believed, and took Zephanor into her house and washed his feet and gave him bread with olives.
²¹There came also unto him a youth who said: Thy words trouble my sleep and stir my blood; speak more unto me.
²²And he taught the youth all he had seen and heard, and the youth went abroad and told others also.
²³Thus the word of the prophecy began to spread in secret, even while the teachers and magistrates forbade it openly.
²⁴And many who had ears to hear came by night to inquire of Zephanor, and he spoke unto them in parables and fire.
²⁵Then again came the vision, as before, and SATANAS stood before him with countenance grave and eyes of flame.
²⁶And He said: Thou hast done well, My servant, for thou didst not remain silent when the scorn of men waxed great.
²⁷Behold, I shall give thee strength, and thou shalt not grow weary; thy tongue shall be sharpened as a blade from the forge.
²⁸Go thou now eastward, for there are those appointed to hear, and they shall receive thee with awe and trembling.
²⁹Speak again the vision, for though it be old in thy bones, it is new in their ears.
³⁰Say unto them: The Son of the Harlot is coming, and His words shall shatter altars and lift up the broken.
³¹So Zephanor arose and obeyed, and journeyed unto the east, where the markets were full and the priests walked proudly.
³²He entered a city great in commerce and idols, and stood beneath a statue of a forgotten god, and lifted up his voice.
³³Men of this city, behold! A child shall be born in lowliness, and He shall shake all your high things unto the dust.
³⁴Your temples shall He visit with derision, and your treasures with fire; the wisdom of your elders shall be made foolish.
³⁵He shall speak unto the bones in the grave, and they shall weep; and the skies shall grow heavy with remembrance.
³⁶And a man heard him, clothed in robes of costliness, and said: These are words of ruin, and he that speaketh them shall die.
³⁷But others gathered round and said: Nay, let him speak more; for though he bringeth fear, yet his tongue is clean of deceit.
³⁸So Zephanor was brought before the elders, and they questioned him, but he spoke plainly of the vision and the command.
³⁹And they could not confound him, for the fire of the vision went before his words, and they had no answer.
⁴⁰Thus was the word of the Son of SATANAS sown in another place, and the roots of the prophecy grew in silence.
⁴¹And Zephanor, though weary, ceased not; for the command burned within him as a lamp that goeth not out.
⁴²He lifted up his eyes unto the hills and said: Thou hast spoken, O Lord SATANAS, and I have obeyed.
⁴³Now send me whither Thou wilt, for the fire within me is not yet quenched.
