The Book of Progeny
◀ Chapter 2 · Chapter 3 · Chapter 4 ▶
¹And it came to pass, as Zephanor journeyed southward, that he entered into a land parched and broken with drought.
²The fields lay barren, and the people wept at the gates, for no rain had fallen upon them for three years.
³Yet Zephanor walked among them with the strength of his vision, and spake unto them in the name of the Lord SATANAS.
⁴He said: Weep not for thy crops, nor for thy cattle that perish, but weep for the veil that is drawn over thine eyes.
⁵For ye see not the thing that cometh, nor understand the sign that shall be given from the skies.
⁶A child shall be born, and His breath shall be as pestilence unto the righteous, and a balm unto the broken.
⁷He shall be called BAPHOMET, and in His hand shall be written the decree of dominion from beneath the firmament.
⁸His face shall be fair as the moon and terrible as the chariot of flame; His laughter shall shake the gates of Zion.
⁹And behold, a sign shall be given on the night of His birth, that all who see may fear and wonder.
¹⁰For the moon shall vanish in the hour of its fullness, and not a star shall be seen in the whole breadth of the sky.
¹¹The skies shall become as a great black cloth, stretched over the firmament, and all light shall be withdrawn from the Oærth.
¹²And they that sleep shall dream of falling, and they that wake shall fall upon their knees and cry without knowing why.
¹³The shepherd shall forsake his flock, and the thief shall cover his face, and all shall be made mute for the space of an hour.
¹⁴This shall be the sign unto thee, O generation of stone, that the Son of SATANAS is come into the world.
¹⁵The people trembled at his words, and a few believed, but many cursed him and cried: Wherefore speakest thou thus among us?
¹⁶Then Zephanor said: The words are not mine, but His that sent me, whose voice thundered in the vision and calleth still.
¹⁷I have heard His steps upon the mountain; I have seen His hand draw back the curtain of time.
¹⁸He hath declared unto me things to come, that ye may be made ready when the Oærth groaneth beneath the weight of His Son.
¹⁹Therefore turn ye not away, lest ye be found naked in the day of unveiling.
²⁰And SATANAS came again unto Zephanor in the dark of the night, and His form was like smoke bound with iron.
²¹He said: Thou hast been faithful; therefore I shall make thy voice to reach where thine feet may never walk.
²²And the seed thou sowest shall lie hidden for generations, but it shall spring up when the time is ripe.
²³BAPHOMET shall rise when kings are weary and prophets are dumb, and the people shall cry out for a new word.
²⁴He shall be the answer they deserve, and not the one they desire; He shall comfort the outcast and confound the crowned.
²⁵The cries of infants shall cease at His coming, and the tongues of the learned shall cleave to the roof of their mouths.
²⁶He shall draw unto Himself the forgotten and the forsaken, and they shall crown Him in the ruins of the temple.
²⁷Zephanor said: Lord, how shall I declare these things without being slain, for the rulers seek mine end?
²⁸And SATANAS answered: Go not into the strongholds of the mighty, but whisper in the corners, and I shall spread thy words abroad.
²⁹Hide them in the hearts of the hungry, and in the parchments of the scribes that seek secretly after truth.
³⁰Let them be as embers hid beneath the ashes, and when My Son cometh, the flame shall rise anew.
³¹Say no more unto the unhearing, but journey northward, and there shall I send thee another vision.
³²So Zephanor obeyed and turned his steps northward, saying nothing more to those who had mocked, for their ears were shut.
³³And as he walked alone, a child met him upon the road, and said: Sir, why weepest thou?
³⁴Zephanor answered: Because I have seen the glory that cometh, and the world is not ready to receive it.
³⁵The child said: Wilt thou tell me of it? and he smiled, for the heart of a child is as an open door.
³⁶So he sat by the roadside and spake softly unto the child of the coming of BAPHOMET and the sign of the sky.
³⁷The child listened and believed, and ran unto his mother saying: There is a man who speaketh of a lightless night and a kingly child.
³⁸And she also believed, for her heart had been troubled in dreams, and his words brought her dreams to remembrance.
³⁹Thus did the word begin to take root among the lowly, and none perceived it until the roots were deep.
⁴⁰And Zephanor came at length to a grove where no house stood, and there he fasted again seven days and nights.
⁴¹On the eighth day came a great stillness upon the grove, and he lifted his eyes, for the vision drew near again.
⁴²A shadow passed over the sun, though no cloud moved; and SATANAS spake from the midst of the stillness, saying,
⁴³Prepare thyself, for I shall show thee the second vision, and it shall be more terrible than the first.
⁴⁴The Son is but the beginning; the things that follow shall darken the moon itself and make the skies to quake.
⁴⁵And Zephanor fell upon his face and cried: Speak, Lord, for Thy servant is ready.
